Until May 2023, A3 has reduced threshold for qualification. you can move from BLUE to GOLD with 27k (plus 6 A3 flights), the details is as below:-

BLUE to SILVER 9k (plus 2 A3 flights)
SILVER to GOLD 18k (plus 4 A3 flights)

also A3 is easier to renew status (providing u do fly a few A3 flights)

12k (plus 2 A3 flights); or
24k (on any star alliance flights)

based on its easier to qualify initially, so I opted for A3 instead of TK.
I believe TPE does allow transits and it started in July. Yes a covid test is required but TPE does allow transits. I know a bunch flying BR, KUL LHR in early August. But I do think TK would be a faster and more relaxing trip

Regarding FFP, its a personal choice, but I would point out that TK's FFP allows a 2 year validity for *G, so you have 2 years to requalify, " 37,500 Status Miles in the two-year membership period, as of the date on which the member is eligible for the Elite card, the duration of the Elite card is extended for another two years." So you are looking at earning just 18,750 miles per year of which none have to be on TK to requalify for *G. Also as you are flying TK on this trip, it does give a idea of how much more you might fly on TK flights vs A3 if your are flying ex KUL, so more options to use upgrade certs, redeem miles etc.

Anyway, just sharing my two cents as in the past I myself was evaluating between A3 and TK and chose TK in the end. Happy Flying
