I was on that flight. There was a three year old with serious health issues (respiratory?) once we were airborne. They asked if a doctor is on board. We got then diverted to St. Johns as already stated. Even though medical staff got the kid immediately off board (also the family) it felt like forever (about 2hrs) until we could proceed to our destination MSP.
Refueling was required and some technical check procedures because were performed an overweight landing (according to the Capt.) as well as some paperwork. I heard not a single word of complaint by a passenger because of the situation, still it was frustrating. Service was also almost non existent. I guess, they have nothing more on board in respect of beverages and snacks than required for the regular itinerary.
The flight was already departing 90mins late from AMS. All together, the delay was about 4hrs. Delta provided vouchers for hotel and food (I have no idea how to use them) and some bonus miles. A nice gesture in my opinion as the incident was not their responsibility.
When we left St Jones we got the information that the child is in stable condition.
