I somewhat understand the dislike by some for the 737 and its reduced width but honestly I don't think I'll have any preference between the A321 Neo and the 737 MAX 10s when they are both bookable in a couple years. I really respect that Delta is not packing these new MAX 10s. Roughly 5 and half feet longer than 737-900ERs and only 2 extra seats. I know Delta is big on upgauging but I also wouldn't be surprised to see a smaller follow-up order for some MAX 8s and maybe even MAX 7s down the road. The MAX 10 should work for most routes but there will be some where the increased field performance of the shorter variants will be needed.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet but this deal also includes Boeing re-configuring the Lion Air 737-900ERs that Delta has got. My guess is that we thrown in to sweeten the MAX 10 deal overall.
