tl;dr -- What once was easy (staying an extra night) is now a complex nightmare to accomplish apparently. Lesson learned, don't involve the front desk. Just reserve online, check in, get digital key, done.
Haven't had to do it often but never had a problem adding an extra night by just letting the front desk know.
That just seems like an isolated issue at one hotel and especially with one poorly trained front desk group that had no idea what they were doing.
