Even back then, though, Bloomsbury was always a bit nicer and quieter. You have more green space, which might be good with a 2 year old. British Museum is close. Other than that, you'll probably have to take transit to most other tourist sites.

I'd probably go for Bloomsbury over Southwark just for the green space, but think either would be fine.
Is the Southwark area nice to go for a walk along the Thames? Or is the area just really dead at night? Would we have better dining options and stuff for the kids in Bloomsbury? The HIX has free breakfast in Southwark, HI in Bloomsbury doesn't.
