The arrival time published by the airline refers to the time the aircraft is estimated at the gate. I can't count how many times I've heard 'we should have you on stand just ahead/behind schedule'...

You can verify this by comparing BA's arrival times to BAA's on their corresponding websites- BA's are all 5-10mins later, inidicating an on stand time rather than BAA's on the ground time.
