Do I loose my right for EU261 compensation if I rebook my flight?

I have booked an award flight from LAX to Vienna over FRA and 3 days before flight received the message that my connecting flight was canceled. Nothing more, nothing for rebooking.

as my understanding of EU261 goes, I am entitled up to 700$ compensation for the following reasons:
  • I was informed less than 14 days
  • EU261 applies to award flights as well
  • The flight goes from US into EU (via United) and connecting flight via Lufthansa.
  • the arrival at my destination will be sufficiently late

I called United and they claim they can only rebook me to a full day later (which is extremely bad because I don’t even have vacation etc)

question: If I do this rebooking via United, do I loose my right for compensation?

Shall I better do nothing and let United/Lufthansa in LAX or FRA figure out the solution?
