You cannot use a gift card to pay for an upgrade from the seat map, and a seat map upgrade also will not usually trigger the credit. If you *change the flight* to a C+ booking (via the change flight function on Delta.com if it works, or by calling if not) then the cost should come through as an additional collection and will generally automatically credit if less than a $250 cost, with no need to use a gift card for part.
