Figured I'd call the GS desk instead, but before I'd sat down and called I received a text message to say I'd been protected. YMMV but there's more than one way to try (in person, online-chat, call, etc.)
Yep agreed. HUCA always helps. Actually, all this protecting didnt help as the flight ended up getting cancelled. They created a new flight for us tomorrow but instead of getting put on that flight, I got put on a direct flight. Normally this would be nice, but the flight was full so it didnt have a decent seat. I'd rather get home a few hours later with a connection if it means I have a nicer seat on a TATL.
I tried chat and asked them to change me back but they couldn't find the flight. Tried waiting in line at the airport as I had to get a hotel voucher anyways but they weren't real UA agents so couldnt change anything. Tried the chat again they said they couldnt do it but then I just repeated my request again and they were able to do it. Ofcourse by then, my old seat was taken already. I've got to fix my skype so I can just call into the 1k line. I will say the one positive of the chat is that I don't need to stay on the line forever while they wait on hold with the rate desk draining my phone's battery and having the listen. I can go do something else and check in every now and then using chat. I also can't call if I'm in flight.
Anyways, overall for protection, I can say that I've never been turned down before. I've nearly always have to push a little though.
