Rules are different these days whether you book with United or a TA as far as residual value is concerned. There are other threads discussing this. If you book with a TA you need to re-book with the TA as well ... the price you pay wanting 5% cashback.
The $50 and UA takes over the ticket can be a good solution for such problems. Unless it is a bulk fare ... UA can do this.
