5 hours in Rome

Long story short: I'm planning a trip to Poland and one of my options is an inexpensive Alitalia flight that will keep me in Rome for about 5 hours. Since there's no Alitalia forum, the "Other Europe" forum isn't particularly popular, and seeing as how I'm planning to bank the miles with WP anyway (God bless Skyteam!... well, most of the time ) I thought this was a good place to ask.

Basically, I want to know if getting from Fiumicino Airport to downtown Rome and back in under 5 hours (including passing through security) is a realistic expection. I've consulted maps and checked out the airport's website but nothing gives me a good idea of the actual distances and times involved. The airport website made no mention of this but is there perhaps a super-short tour of Rome, ala Changi in Singapore, in which I could indulge myself? Or a private tour outfit, maybe?

Thanks.

By the way, it occurred to me not long ago that I ask a lot more questions than I answer on this forum. It is my hope that, perhaps many years hence, I myself will be as wise as RadioFlyer, Slippahs, or the legendary Industrial Patent (who seems to be the invisible 10-ton gorilla around here despite the apparent permanence of his absence -- kinda wish I'd been around when he was posting). In the meantime, I'll keep flying and hopefully even meet some of you boys and girls out there. Thanks for all your past, and future, hard work and advice. ^ ^ ^
