This isn't actually true. Qantas will allow credit for flights taken up to 30 days prior to enrolment so are a good bet to go for. It says on the website in the FAQ

"Can I claim credit for flights taken prior to membership of the program?

Points for eligible flights undertaken up to thirty days before your enrolment date may be credited to your account. Forward by mail all original documentation, including boarding passes or ticket copies to the Frequent Flyer Service Centre."
