Typically inventory does not go back when it is canceled now but you should keep checking daily for that date up until your arrival.
I can confirm that the canceled room will go back to the inventory immediately. I have used my points to hold spots and canceled to rebook using my free night certificate several times at this property both for myself and for other people. It definitely works. If you don't see it going back to the inventory after someone canceling, it just means it was already taken by somebody else.
