The widespread inability to clear an SWU at booking is not new and is unrelated to Loyalty Points. It has not materially changed in the last 7 years. There are still flights at various degrees of advance booking that have availability. I used SWUs for LHR-JFK from basic econ to J for next month (Europe in the summer, even!)... I just had to be flexible with dates to find a date that was confirmable at booking.
