I am also debating with booking with a online travel agent, but the information that you get before paying is limited and may end up paying for extras.
I will phone the airline up tomorrow and see what kind of deal they can offer me, it's 6 month's before we fly .
I can totally understand your frustration and yes having to pay for seats is an easy way of generating more revenue for airlines. Fortunately I am exempt from that when flying with SQ, but as a good example, I recently flew domestically with Qantas and between the time I checked in online to confirm my preferred seat, and got to the airport, I had been reassigned to a middle seat at the rear of the aircraft, and all attempts to reason with the ground staff fell on deaf ears.

Finally, I gave a booking with travel agents, for flights on the SQ, ages ago. In my experience, the fare difference can be minimal, but it is an absolute pain if you ever need to make any amendments because you will always be redirected back to the travel agent, the majority of whom impose more fare restrictions, and charge you extra for even the most simple changes.
