WhatsApp is the current market leader (in terms of downloads), but we're only talking about 30% market share. Furthermore, in addition to North America, it has extremely low penetration in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
Fragmentation aside, a problem with relying on messaging apps for customer service is that new ones are constantly entering the fray.
