Lots of good advice in this thread. In addition to the stuff listed by others above, I recommend a clothes-pin or two, great for holding the drapes together and keeping the light from coming through the cracks, and can be helpful for hanging stuff to dry that you had to handwash in a pinch.

Another item I find I use far more often than I ever would have suspected before someone else recommended it to me, is a small roll of twine. Comes in handy for all sorts of makeshift uses. The most valueable was when my suitcase latch busted at the airport in Lisbon. I was able to tie the suitcase together and get home without buying a new overpriced suitcase at the airport.

A good (small) phrasebook is also handy when traveling to foreign lands.
