That's definitely a change from my days (early 2000s). Giving out direct station numbers was a major no-no. I wonder if it's the real number, or just some telephony that links to a vmail box or another res desk. I wouldn't put too much stock in the caller ID, it's easy to spoof that with our antiquated SS7 phone system.
It's only the BSO number. They connect to real live people (or VM if they don't answer). I have. SAT and AUS numbers for DL, AA, and UA. (Travel way too much and nearly always international with OAL connections, so bags get lost/misdirected frequently)
Again, they will not handle anything but bags. Done to prevent being used as work around.
