In a short period of time I started to rack up the miles on business class tickets on AA and other OW carriers, I'm new to AA. I am sitting at 98k Qualifying Points and 78k Qualifying Miles. I don't understand the program enough to figure out the differences between these two types of points, but I do know I want to make Exec Platinum before the year ends. 2K more points will require no more than 4K more butt-in-seat miles at the lowest discount fares, fewer at higher fares. Therefore, go for the points. Forget the miles. They're for people who do much of their flying at less than full economy fare.
