Last weekend I almost booked a trip ORD-LAX on 26 Nov (for departure on the 26th), returning the 27th. Fare was only $300; if I wanted to stay until the 28th, the lowest I could find was $800+.
The 28th was "special" above and beyond a normal Sunday in that a lot of the S, T, and even W fares had in their fine print "does not apply for travel on 11/28" ... that Sunday is such a big travel day that the airlines knew they could limit the availability of the lower fare buckets and still have good volume.
But I have noticed this fall that a lot of UA's fare rules no longer require Saturday stays; I snicker at the "Hint: Fares will be cheaper with a Saturday stay" line on united.com these days
