Just finished a quick one-nighter at the Marriott Hacienda Belen.
For a basic stay near the airport, I was super impressed with the entire property. The hotel is thoroughly modern in a cool hacienda setting, but the hospitality and service is distinctly Marriott 25 years ago. Fantastic, capable staff, friendly people throughout the property. Coming from the US, I felt like I'd been timewarped back to when I first hit Platinum in the late 1990s - when Marriott was well-known in the industry for its training and quality of staff at the mainline Marriott level.
There are two restaurants (I think) - one appeared to be more of a full-menu restaurant and the other was a bar & grill. We arrived at 9PM and grabbed a quite bite in the bar & grill which was pretty good for some appetizers and late-evening drinks.
Great service in the executive lounge, a proper Titanium welcome amenity (wine and cheese delivered to the room), and really nice well-maintained grounds. Pool was a little chilly but the whirlpool was great.
Note that there is no free airport shuttle. The front desk can arrange a variety of transportation options. A standard taxi is $20, a large van is about $30, and there appears to be a shared shuttle option for $15 per room (although I sort of scratched my head as to why anyone would select this...I guess 3-4 people with lots of luggage?). An UberX to the airport was about $5...but some Uber drivers will drop you at the sidewalk about 75 meters from the terminal door since they aren't technically allowed directly at the terminal. Ubers around the hotel were plentiful and it wouldn't be a problem to use one to get into the city or elsewhere. There are guides online to how to get an Uber *from* SJO, but we didn't try it since we knew it would involve walking with luggage to a place we weren't familiar with.
