It sounds to me like this "hot mess" was just a long check-in line for non-elites? And had you been further back in the line they would have pulled you out of the line when your flight got close?

Sounds like a non-issue to me. Arriving earlier just means that you wait in line longer. Had you arrived 2-3 hr before your flight you would still have made it to the gate in time for boarding.
