Truthfully, it does affect where you sit. I was holding off booking my seat selection as I thought if you could pre-book your meal, you don't really need to worry about where you sit. If not, you have to sit as close as possible to where crew start taking menu orders or you miss out on your first (and sometimes second) choice. I remember flying in Club and only having a fish option and I don't really eat fish.
