Hilton Garden Inn Toronto Airport = Excellent for Overnight Stay
Introduction I stayed a few times at Hilton Garden Inn Toronto Airport in the past but it had been a while and I recently returned. With a suite upgrade and the significantly above average breakfast it made me wonder why I tried other hotels near YYZ recently rather than returning to HGI but clearly the value for the money is solid and arguably better than even the full-service Hilton nearby which has fallen out of favor. Location The shuttle bus from YYZ to HGI runs every 30 minutes which is fairly standard for hotels in the area and is shared with Hilton. Room Before arrival I noticed that I had been upgraded as Hilton Diamond to a 1-bedroom suite. For airport hotels I tend to be more relaxed about having a suite upgrade or not but the extra space was nonetheless appreciated and can be the deciding factor at times when I am hesitating between booking at a hotel known to be generous with upgrades or another one known to be stingy. The room at HGI was decent with a stand-alone shower (no tub) and hardwood floor in the living room which were both pluses. The one weakness was that the room could use some more lighting because there were none on the ceiling. Dining In many parts of the world, I often find that the Diamond breakfast at HGI brand hotels punches significantly above its weight given the price tag which tends to be more modest than at full service hotels. This HGI is no exception: there was an excellent a la carte menu to go along with a small buffet, all in a visually attractive restaurant. Their breakfast puts many more expensive hotels to shame where we sometimes have a mediocre buffet and sometimes even limited to choices of cold food only (hot food with surcharge). Overall I used to stay more often at Hilton YYZ but after they permanently closed their executive lounge I am not sure what Hilton has to offer over other brands which are normally considered inferior, such as HGI. The breakfast at HGI is far better than at Hilton based on what I saw last time at Hilton and HGI can upgrade to suites at times despite this brand not even being part of the Hilton Diamond upgrade program so they do it for competitive reasons more so than because someone is twisting their arm. Another Hilton family hotel I like near Toronto Airport is DoubleTree YYZ West especially if I would like a hotel with a lounge, however the location is farther away than HGI and it has a less convenient shuttle schedule. Overall I can recommend HGI YYZ as a solid choice for an overnight near the airport and I will continue to return.
