If you use a discount code for which you do not qualify and have an accident with a serious damage cost, you provide your insurance company (doesn't matter, the rental company, or your credit card) an easy excuse to deny your claim.
If you don't have an accident, most likely no one will care about the code you use
This is also be a good point. I could 100% see this. Especially if using a corporate code that included damage coverage with the rental agency.
With that said I had damage (no accident, just damage- rock thrown at window) on a vehicle last year rented for personal use with an employer's rate code (stipulated in the policy of my employer that code could be used for business or personal rentals) and I have one of those personal credit cards that provides damage coverage primary... nobody ever commented on the corporate code I used. Eventually the card benefit administrator cut a check for the damage.
