4 nights in Turks and Caicos at Como Parrot Cay
Introduction My fiancée and I stayed at Como Parrott Cay for 4 nights in June 2022. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on the private island, with a few critiques. Overall, it was a very relaxing stay that we had to reschedule from July 2021 to June 2022. The resort was very accommodating for this reschedule and in terms of crediting our charges for future use, this was handled extremely well. Check In Upon arriving in PLS we made our through customs and we located the Como Parrot Cay desk. We were quickly loaded into a black Suburban and driven 30 minutes to a dock in the Leeward Settlement. There was a Como Parrot Cay lounge with snacks and waters available while our luggage was transferred to the boat that would take us to Parrot Cay. The ride was 25 minutes to Parrot Cay. Upon arrival we we loaded into a golf cart and were driven about 3.5 miles to the main area of the resort. Along the way, a staff member gave us a detailed tour of the property, helping us feel immediately oriented as to where everything was on the private island. We were then taken directly to our room. Overall, while there were a lot of steps to arriving on Parrot Cay, it was quite simple and never felt stressful. It certainly was well worth the trek to be in such an exclusive place. Room We were in room 204 on this stay. It was a base room (Garden View Room). It was on the lower floor of one of the most centrally located block of rooms. We knew what to expect as far as rooms at PC, so we were not underwhelmed upon arrival. If you are expecting an ultramodern, newly updated room, then the regular rooms will certainly be underwhelming. The room is simple and has a Caribbean charm to it. It had a king bed, a small sitting area, and a decently spacious bathroom. The beach houses were out of our budget for this trip, but we found no problem with just starting our day at the gym, having breakfast, then making our way to the beach/pool for the majority of the day, then retreating to our room to get ready for dinner in the evening.I understand that some travelers might be more inclined to have more modern and/or spacious accommodations. I’m not sure if the beach houses at PC would suffice for such travelers as I did not see the interior of any of them, however, the regular rooms were perfectly suitable for us for this trip. Service The service at PC was generally good, but there was a mixed bag of service styles and execution levels. At the pool and beach bar, the service was very good. It was never crowded at all, but lunch and drink orders were taken promptly and delivered in a very efficient manner. We never had to wait extreme amounts of time, or work particularly hard to get the attention of the beach club staff. Overall, they were all very attentive and helpful. We ate dinner once at Lotus, twice at Terrace, and once privately. The dinner service between the two restaurants was quite similar. The staff were all very helpful, warm, and did their jobs with generally positive attitudes. The service at the spa was tremendous. All of the staff members there were incredibly kind and friendly. They all seemed enthusiastic about showing off the setting and facilities that the spa had to offer. We received a couples massage, as well as a private dining experience that took place in the spa cottage. We left the spa both times feeling very well taken care of and appreciated the friendliness of the staff in all of our interactions there. The area in which we found service to be generally lacking was during breakfast at the Terrace restaurant. Here the service tended to be slow for simple requests. The service tended to just not be as friendly and warm as the rest of the resort. This is all not to say that the service at breakfast was awful, it just really didn’t measure up to the delivery of service in other areas of the resort.Housekeeping serviced our room in a very non-intrusive manner, typically immediately after we left for breakfast in the mornings. For turndown service they came to the room right after we left for our dinner reservations. We only briefly even saw the housekeeping staff, so they did a very good job with executing their service. Dining In my estimation, the overall dining at PC was good. We arrived early enough on our first day to spend a good deal of time at the beach club and had an excellent lunch with Caribbean flavors (Jerk Chicken Wrap) as well as the healthy and nourishing Como Shambhala cuisine (Big Salad).Dinner on our first night at Terrace was pretty disappointing with a quite limited and uncreative menu that evening. I ordered Fish and Chips, while my fiancée ordered a Caesar salad which were both adequate, but not spectacular. For our second night we dined at the resorts Asian fusion restaurant - Lotus. While we were there, the resort alternated nightly between Lotus and Terrace being open every other night. Our second night on property we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Lotus including shrimp tempura maki, chicken and shrimp dumplings, pork belly bao, Pad Thai, and a sweet and spicy rack of lamb. Most of the nights we ordered a variety of sorbets, particularly enjoying the chocolate, coconut, and passion fruit typically. Our third evening at the resort, we tried Terrace again (without having much of a choice), and we were much more encouraged by the menu on this evening. The menu this night was skewed much more towards Mediterranean flavors. We ordered a nice selection of mezze (including hummus, zucchini fritters, and calamari) all of which were very good. For our main we ordered the seafood paella for two which was a very good dish as well. Our final dinner was a private dining experience where we were hosted in the spa cottage. We received a couples massage, had a short time to relax a bit, and then we were served dinner in the cottage. We were able to choose from both the Como Shambhala menu, as well as the Terrace menu, so our meal became quite eclectic including, salmon maki, a Greek salad, Pad Thai, as well grilled grouper which was prepared perfectly with a side of mixed vegetables with pesto. We ordered a mango and passionfruit cheesecake, as well as more sorbets.Breakfasts were mostly the same each day, with the continental breakfast buffet to choose from, including pastries, breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, muesli, cured meats, and fresh orange and green juices. We also ordered from the a la carte menu. We ordered green goddess eggs, a couple of custom omelettes/scramble, coconut waffles, blueberry pancakes, and the smoothie bowl. These dishes were all fair to good, with the smoothie bowl standing out the most. We were not blown away with breakfast, but found it to be more than suitable to start our days off. Location Como Parrot Cay is located on a private island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago. The only thing on the island is the resort and the private residences. The water is crystal clear and the sand on the mile stretch of beach is powdery white. The views from the resort pool and beach look out onto the Atlantic Ocean with North Caicos just across a small channel being the only other land in sight. There’s a great feeling of privacy and exclusivity once you are on the island, as there really is nothing on the island other than the resort. The beach club is a great place to spend the majority of your time if you are staying in any of the “regular rooms”. There is a family pool and also an adults only pool. These are directly next to each other, but they are private from one another, divided by a bar as well as some vegetation. There is a kids club, activity desk, as well as two tennis courts directly behind where the beach club area is.There is the main building of the resort that contains the Terrace restaurant, the front desk, a small gift shop, the library/game room, as well as a bar near the entry area. Past the mainly building, just a 3 minute walk down the road is the Como Shambhala Retreat spa facilities. There’s a very well equipped gym with a small pool below the gym. After the gym comes the yoga pavilion. Next down the road is the spa cottage as well two treatment pavilions. Finally, there is the main building for the spa which is quite expansive. It contains numerous treatment rooms, spacious locker rooms, as well as a shared gender hot tub. All of these facilities have wonderful views of North Caicos and the mangroves that lie in between it and PC. Activities Non-motorized water activities are offered complimentary at PC. We used standup paddle boards and snorkel masks, but there were also hobie cats, windsurfing, kayaks, etc. all available to use on the ocean. We also took advantage of the complimentary bike rentals and cruised along the 3.5 mile semi paved road that we took upon arrival to get to the resort. It was fun for us to explore the island at our own leisurely pace. We stumbled upon the banana plantation on our way which was fun to check out. We also passed a number of driveways leading to some of the private homes and villas on the island. We did not partake in any of the tours, boat outings, or other activities they have on offer, but overall we were satisfied with what they had available from an activity standpoint. Overall All in all, we had a great time at PC. The island is very exclusive and the beach, ocean, and pool really stood out for us. We were looking to just lounge around and spend the majority of our time in and around the water and this resort was a perfect fit for that. The service at the beach club was a big part of what made this trip special (thanks to Alroy, Darma, D, Yoga, and Kiki in particular), since we spent the majority of our time at the beach club. Their attentiveness and friendliness created a very relaxing environment for us at the pool and beach. For some particularly discerning travelers, I imagine that the “regular rooms” won’t cut it, as they are just rather average. I presume that being in a room category of the beach houses or higher would definitely elevate the experience at PC, so maybe for our next trip we’ll have to try out a beach house. Since we weren’t in one of those rooms, I won’t comment other than the fact that those accommodations have great sections of beach directly in front of them. When we travel to a beach destination, we like to create a little daily routine of going to the gym, eating breakfast, and then spending the majority of the day near the beach or pool. We also like to mix in a spa treatment or two while traveling. Como Parrot Cay was the perfect place to do such a routine and ultimately made this trip a great success!
