This DID happen to me way back in July 2010 enroute from LA to Chicago but the fire took place somewhere near Iowa so only the last meal was affected - for us, they picked up 150 Chicken sandwiches from McDonalds in addition to hamburgers.
While not delicious at all, since this was to be my last dining meal after a round trip train across the country, I was fine as I was conversationed-out after appx 10 meals in dining car.
With that said Id definitely ask for compensation and if you don’t get it dispute it with your credit card.
And, most importantly, I’d rebook and attempt it again - when the dining does indeed work, it’s a very cool experience!
Won't win a credit card dispute, the Amtrak ticket was for transportation Amtrak can undeniably prove that was provided. That'll be all the bank needs or will look at.
Amtrak Customer Relations has traditionally been quite good about compensation in these kinds of situations. They will likely provide at least a partial refund of the accommodation charge either via voucher or cash, and, as I said, they may refund all of it. They may be more generous with a voucher.
BTW, since the Starlight is the only train that allows Business Class passengers in the dining car, but it isn't included in their ticket, there are prices established for the meals on the Starlight. The cash price for the meals OP did not receive is $70. $25 for lunch and $45 for dinner. However, I would expect Customer Relations to offer more than that.
