...I tried asking united mileageplus for "original routing credit". My first two responses from them were non-sequiturs, as if they didn't grasp the situation and so just loaded up a stock response to some other question. The third response said "If we request this, we will first delete all the miles you earned and then you might get nothing from ANA." Not very helpful. I think they thought I was requesting ANA miles rather than United miles, but it's hard to say based on the one-sentence reply.

Any advice here? Give up? Btw, it would be really bad if this happened to you in December and you suddenly fell short of 1k status, with no recourse.
Emailing 1kvoice (the advice I got here) eventually paid off and they restored what I should have earned with the original flights. It took several weeks, but I'm happy.
