At one point multiple Avis locations at least in CA/NV posted what looked like location-made (paper in a plastic holder or laminated sheet taped to the plastic barriers between clerk and customer) signs on the counters that if you were renting with a Corporate ID, to have that Corporate ID ready.

If you don't have access to the corporate ID anymore, use at your own risk.

At a location where Avis Preferred skips the counter and goes straight to the vehicle I do think it is a lot less likely they'll check this. But they have every right to check...
