Could you start your journey from LHR, dropping the first leg, but asking for a credit of TP & Avios from the original routing?

I have a trip in August where I have a domestic positioning flight to get to the start point the day before, spending time with some old friends.

But if the first leg was cancelled and then drop the outward positioning flight?
Possibly you can ask to drop the first leg if under 300 miles so I suspect with your domestic flight that may be allowed. You won't get any points for the dropped flight and it's not really an ORC claim.

Assume your positioning flight is a separate booking so you need to deal with that based on the cancellation rules that apply to it. If under BWC you could get a voucher. Of course if the positioning and first legs are a b2b they should both be cancelled together so opens up the possibility of a refund.
