Day 4 - Goats, Tea, and Pineapple!

For the 4th day, we booked an activity we found on Airbnb called "Typical Breakfast With the Goats". My wife likes big dumb animals (hey she married me), and I like breaksfast so it was a winner. It started to rain, so we looked at indoor activities. Next we visited the Tea Plantation, followed by the pineapple plantation. Two out of three of these activities were awesome, an one that sort of sucked.

Up First, Breakfast With the Goats: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/8...e-83dcfd3429c5

This dude, Ricardo decided to quit his career and open a goat farm. To my shock, it was essentially in a residential (or by usa standard suburban) neighborhood. First Ricardo had us hang out with the goats, and get to know the flock a little bit. He had around 40 goats total of different age, with only one stud, who sits on his goat couch, and has sex when needed. I need to trade his jobs. I told Ricardo if he ever gets 5000 more goats, we can go into business together making Renewable Natural Gas from goat poop. He was into it.

After getting attacked by goats for 30 minutes, we went on to milking the goats. Although this was a small farm, each goat does 3 - 5 liters of goat milk per day. Despite the size of the operation he had equipment from GEA for storage, and fridgeration suggesting this is a pretty sophisticated operation. The farm also had a ton of other cute animals circulating, such as a pen of angry dog, a few flocks of angry ducks, and a kitten who stole the show.

Next we had breakfast. I didn't photograph this (doh!), but we had three types of Azorian Bread, a bunch of different cheeses made from his goat milk, and lots of jams and this tasty pork spread. We ended up staying until around 1, chatting up Ricardo. If we didn't leave we'de still be there I suspect.

We were close to the famous Tea Plantation, and went. The Tea Plantation: https://gorreana.pt/en/

This was the one place is the Azores that felt like a tourist trap. They do tours, but they were cancelled because of the weather, but we wandered the facility a little bit. It was mainly old school seperating, drying, and bagging equipment. They also had free samples. The one thing preventing this from being a full blown tourist trap is they didn't charge for everything! There were also 4 - 5 tour busses pulled up here. There was also some good hiking, but the weather prevented this, and everything was foggy. After a disapointment with tea, we headed back full of cheese and caffiene to Ponta Delgada.

Along the way we spotted the famous Pineapple Plantation: https://ananasdosacores.pt/en/plantacao/

After a bit of a disapointing trip to the Tea Factory, the Pineapple reignited my love for agro-tourism. The pineapples are grown in greenhouses, and they periodically rub the roof with chalk to control the sun content per the pineapple needs. There was much more to pineapple growing than I thought, and after a facinating exhibit we headed to the Pineapple bar. There, you get a free shot of pineapple liqour. Feeling buzzed we ordered pineapple juice, and what I call "Pineapple Fosters", which is flambayed pineapple served with icecream. Delicious, and unique. You could get anything pineappley, including sliced pineapple, some mixed drinks, and even a selectionof sandwhiches.

The weather improved and the day rebounded. We spent the evening wandering the streets of Ponta Delgada, did some souviner shopping, and got some Azorian Wine to drink while we watched some more Stranger Things.

For dinner we checked out the Azorian Churascoria. We started with a fried octopus, which might have been the best thing I ate on this trip. This was followed by Steak and Ribs, and a nice cheesecake to finish. Covered in meat, it was time to call it an evening!
