Most, if not all, of the newer non-apple players that are shipping now are compatible with Windows Media Player
10 which has an outstanding interface (recently won PC Mags Editors Choice award). With players that are compatible with WMP 10, there no longer is a need to use the player manufacturer's software for ripping and syncing.

I think the iPod interface is very nice. Streamlined, not flashy, with great usability.
The hardware interface also has a much higher quality feel in comparison to other HD based players of that size. I had a Rio Carbon for a while and it was very difficult to use in comparison.
