Is Part of the Problem the Airline Sold more Seats Than They Knew They could Handle?

When I continually read about the horrible experience of not enough crew, staff, etc to complete flights, I wonder if the airline did it with another motive in mind - cash in their pockets. They had to have been able to count the number of crew and how many flights they could cover, yet sell more seats than they knew they could cover. The cash comes in and people eventually get to where they want to go (even days later) and they have all that nice cash in the bank. I know that the airline would NEVER do anything to make a profit at the "expense" of the passengers !!!!
