FWIW, there's also the concept of exchanging homes simultaneously (i.e. you don't have to hang out with the stranger). One example is home exchange.

We've done this a few times in Europe and loved it. On many occasions, we've overlapped by a half-day with our reciprocal hosts, which was nice to get to know each other, but most of the time both parties were mutually independent.
