Upon arrival to Ponta Delgada the first task was to pick up the rental car. We ended up using Ilha Verde, mainly because they were the only person with availability that I could afford. I would avoid these dudes in the future, mainly because the line to pick up was about 5 times bigger than the other options, the car was 2/3 full with gas (and they tried to charge me for not returning with a full tank), and even better I apparently scratched the mirror and was charged 160 euro. Still need to take this one up with insurance and get some money back. The good news is the car was nice, new, and comfy. I would say they have a good mix of stick and auto transmissions available; and I'm glad I didn't try to quit drinking or drive stick here, with lots of narrow, hilly streets.
Thanks for the tips on rental cars. I will avoid that company! BTW, is there a big price difference between auto or manual transmissions? Also, is it necessary to rent a car on the island? (I suppose public transportation to get around for tourism is not convenient or extensive?)
