I'll try for compensation and see what happens. Air France canceled my flight a day before I began my trip and could have rebooked me on LH or UA, and perhaps plenty of others.

Meanwhile, I have a revenue ticket from BER to CDG on Monday with a two-hour layover and then a separate award ticket from CDG to IAD, all on AF. I am strongly considering booking BER-FRA-IAD on LH instead.
