Ah yes I understand now and being stuck in a pen makes more sense - I couldn't work that bit out earlier. Sorry for misunderstanding.
Basically since the epassport gates were put in a few years ago they have re-arranged domestic connections so you do immigration first then go on to the bp gate - and that means if you fail at the bp check you effectively stuck between the two. Before the epassport gates were put in it was the other way around so you did the bp check first then did immigration.
