Chaos - a Greek word in origin but one which is very British Airways
Flew into Heathrow T5 last night on the delayed BA735 from Geneva- due to arrive 1920 but arrived on stand 2118 having waited 25 minutes after landing for stand to become available. Was connecting up to Glasgow on the 2100 with inflight manager on Geneva flight telling us not to worry as we would make our connection given that the Glasgow flight was delayed.
Made the mistake of going through immigration for connecting domestic flights and that's where real trouble started. Boarding pass wouldn't scan as I hadn't been able to clear security within the 35 minute cut off time for the scheduled flight departure time. No BA staff in that area and only after 20 minutes and by another passenger literally shouting for someone from BA to come and help us did a BA staffer who was passing enter the 'pen' - which now had about 20 passengers whose boarding passes wouldn't scan- and try to assist but he couldn't get my boarding pass to scan or advise of any new flight details for today.
Exited through UK rivals and went upstairs to find absolute chaos. No staff at any of the First desks at all. Joined the small queue at CW desk for the agent to shout across that she was dealing with her last customer and that we should go to zone A where we found horrendous queue of delayed passengers not moving quickly at all due to too few BA staff. At 11pm decided to look for hotel for the night- absolutely none at Heathrow (several other passengers like me were checking various websites without success and I also tried calling several hotels) and took a taxi to central London where I found a hotel at an eye wateringly exorbitant price.
Flight booking disappeared from my exec club account and as such had no idea about alternative flight home arrangements for today. Made a new reservation for a flight from London City for 1pm today and when I arrive GLA will speak to the baggage people and ask for my luggage to be sent north.
Flight that I was booked on up to Glasgow last night left nearly 3 hours late at 2356 and I could easily have made the flight having landed 2118 from Geneva had BA had an ounce of efficiency.
Can only but feel for the other passengers who were in a similar situation - I was lucky insofar as I had the resources to take a cab to central London and pay for a hotel and rebook and pay for another flight today, but many in the same situation as me would not have been in that situation.
