Another GGU success story (I'm only MVPG, so these things excite me) .. booked PDX-OGG roundtrip on companion fare for July awhile back, though only return leg had U space, which I did apply one set to. I've been fairly religiously looking for U space to appear over the last month or so for our outbound, and now about 1.5 weeks out from departure, outbound just released x2 U space early and called in to apply the other two. Feeling pretty elated over this Companion Fare / First Class upgrade combo.
The only thing better is getting multiple segments upgraded with one GGU each if your itinerary has (a) connection(s) between origin & destination.
Recently, I have booked 2 HNL-SFO mid-December with a discount code & 2 ATL-SEA-YVR in February with a companion certificate as part of a larger open jaw itinerary.
Lately, there isn't a lot of deeper discount Main fares available so the upfare to N class for GGU application is minimal, if any upfare is required.
