I spent a really happy week at the JW with my family - we were four adults and a baby. I think the thread/wiki summarises the experience well so I will try to add a few unique parts from us. We booked a Points + Cash Upgrade for a Duplex Beach Pool Villa, and then added on the All-Inclusive (Star) package (USD 375++ per adult per day) which gave us all inclusive food/drinks, plus access to all the restaurants for dinner, plus champagne, and free baby food. This was well worthwhile as having only a single restaurant (Aailaa) for a week would have gotten boring. Shio (steak) and Hashi (Japanese) were where we ate most of our evening meals. The variety of choice was good and we didn't pay any extras for F&B during the stay as a result - and that included us ordering some of the super expensive menu items at Shio/Hashi (e.g. USD328++ seafood platters, sharing t-bone steaks for USD300++), the only thing we were told wasn't included was caviar and fresh oysters. This meant our spend was controlled, though when you are spending about USD4000/day, excluding points, that "control" is relative...
Overall the stay was really made special by the excellent friendly staff, many of whom were new as well, so the resort would appear to have a really good hiring policy. They looked after us really well, remembered food preferences and really made the baby feel welcome. This meant we could easily overlook minor service issues (e.g. occasional missing orders, strange ordering of food arrival) that I suppose may be the difference from the Ritz.
We went during the off-season (June), so thought I could add the following tips:
- Be aware that the diving/boating activities can be cancelled for days due to high winds. Dive when you get the chance, don't save it!
- The resort felt really empty, no real need for restaurant reservations (though we did anyway out of politeness for dinner). The staff said that it was 50% occupancy, but we only saw a few families and couples around, so potentially many people eat room service in their rooms
- I suspect that a number of the restaurants run reduced hours during this season (e.g. the Italian Fiamma and Thai Kaashi) were only open for lunch and then Hashio/Shio were only for dinner. This wasn't inconvenient for us at all, as it gave us variety and a lot of good food (an advantage of the all inclusive package encouraging you to eat three times a day)
- The Lounge 18 clubhouse was closed and boarded off, as was Riha, and no mention of an open air cinema
- There were a lot of daily activities, we barely did any, but they seemed to struggle with numbers (not that we really felt this impacted our holiday, but if you really wanted to do something every few hours it may be a constraint)
- There were occasional rain showers for a few minutes, and bits of rain overnight, but they didn't interrupt our holiday in the least
COVID impact: None I think: No masks anywhere, all of the food was al-la-carte, no buffets (Except for a few pastries/salad/juices at breakfast)
For families - the all day manned play area/Little Griffin club (9.30am-10.30pm) is near rooms 121-124, they were also more protected from the beach with additional trees, I was grateful to get a room here, very good for kids older than 3 as you can leave them to play in a superb space, whilst you relax (should you wish). We spent a lot of time by our private pool as it was shaded and therefore easier to spend the whole day without getting burned. The hotel did say they could babysit, but in the end we just took the baby out with us all the time.
