Climbing Mt Fuji off-season

I'm considering climbing in mid-Sept, right after the official season finishes (Sept 10 this year). Has anyone here had the experience?
I see there are some professional guides that offer off-season climbs, but I am pretty confident we can make it without them. Plus their tours leave from Tokyo and we'd be driving and staying nearby anyway.

We have a window of about 5-6 days, so hopefully we can find a day with decent weather.
