MMX-starting airfares to ORD that route via CPH-ORD have definitely been cheaper at times than just CPH-ORD, but it’s something I would avoid for at least younger minors flying alone the whole way.

MMX, VBY and GOT were T5 for my bookings earlier this month. Long may it stay that way. Never liked the “domestic terminal” thing at ARN.
At the time of booking, it was designed as a status run. Unfortunately Aegean reduced the earnings and it was for naught, but it was significantly cheaper than CPH-ORD. MMX-ARN-ORD used to be an option but I don't think that there are connections that don't require an overnight at ARN.

With that being said, the MMX-ARN-CPH-??? run has been good for acquiring vouchers for EUR compensation. Misconnects on the outbound usually strand us at CPH, so we can take the train home and fly out the next day. On the return, ARN-MMX gets canceled often enough that we can pick up vouchers for a few hours delay. And if we really aren't up for it, we sometimes "miss "the CPH-ARN-MMX section of the return and just head home by train
