IIRC there were two types of Shuttle tickets, one flex that guaranteed an alternative flight and one (cheaper) that didn’t. But yes, if you turned up with the right ticket they would guarantee a service. At least once the aircraft wheeled out for it was Concorde, though I never did find out whether that was just a marketing ploy rather than genuinely being the only aircraft available. Definitely operated on the shuttles though.
I used to have a "charge card" issued by BA in the late 80s (I think it was Executive Club branded - even back then). You used this in a kiosk. You got an option of the next 2 (I think) flights. Choose the flight, choose your seat, and the kiosk spat out a BP and ticket receipt. I think it was around £50 each way.
Then I'd get a monthly statement with all the flights.
