To answer my own question....one must have QR Avios, so I transfered BA Avios and Viola! I can now search without errors on QR.

Also, to answer OP's original question, it takes the same amount of Avios for the same flights booked either on BA or QR....but.... the taxes and fees are cheaper if booked on QR (for QR flights) as opposed to booking on BA.
