I don’t know if Heathrow have staff (or BA for that matter) who will get you to the next gate fast tracked or priority if you have a close connection (or arrived a little later than scheduled) as I read they had in past but that was before covid times. So I may be best to stick to overnight.

the Edinburgh flight over the last few days had arrived early/late/ on time so a real mixed bag… it’s not entirely reliable.
Staying overnight is the most prudent option. Given the ongoing post-Covid flight disruption including cancellations (especially domestic), I wouldn't risk option 1 or probably not even option 2 right now. Yes, BA will put you on the next available flight(s) but the key word is available. The reduced number of flights means that existing flights are very busy (as you're already starting to see) so you may experience significant delays before you get booked on a new flight. And no, staff will not give you any preferential treatment if you have a tight connection. If you meet the minimum connection time, you're on your own (unless you're a very high status customer or celebrity).
