Fyi, an update.
I won my chargeback case with amex. Which then actually didn't matter as I finally got, a few days after that, an apology from Hertz saying I indeed hadn't caused damage and shouldn't have been charged.
So I am a bit shocked at this - many months after winning this case, Hertz has sent the German debt collectors after me, for 35 euro of the original several hundred euro charge (a late arrival fee they're calling it). But I argued the late arrival fee (as part of the wider charge) with amex and as mentioned won the whole case with amex.
Can Hertz really do this? A company who loses a case with a credit card just decides to go after you anyway via debt collectors? That defeats the whole purpose of the chargeback procedure.
Very stressed now.
