I'm happy to report that my friend's luck with CX has finally turned a corner - he just got an op upgrade tonight from HKG-SIN! Upon asking at check-in how full the flight was, the agent told him he's getting upgraded, and added that they'll have a business class veggie meal for him. (The flight was quite full - J was full - and his colleague, a CX Diamond, was of course upgraded as well.)
