Is that Amex’s way of telling me that they have sent me a check (without me requesting it)?
Yes, this happened to one of my cards. I just accidentally saw it then initiated a chat to find out it was the credit refund check which when I rec'd 10 days later, showed the issuance date being 2 days after the activity posting date.
Also during the chat I learned that you could request an ACH of the credit refund to your registered payment bank account. If you plan to go this route, you should NOT have any charge in the same billing cycle because the system would block automatic request. Rep could do a manual request but apparently the amount refunded must be reduced by twice the charge amount from the credit balance.
If you have credit balance that you do not think you would be able to use it up quickly the best option is to request the ACH credit refund. Otherwise AMEX system will generate the refund on the closing date of the 3rd billing cycle that still shows a credit balance.
