For what it is worth, I had a 17 hour connection at CDG in April. I purchased the LP upgrade at the transit desk after arriving off my flight from Dublin at around 4pm, and was in the LP lounge by around 5pm after waiting to purchase the upgrade. Spent around 4-5 hours in the lounge in the evening, and made sure I had a booking for the spa facial for the following morning, before taking me across to the Yotel Transit Hotel in the Audi. The next morning, they collected me at the time of my choice from the Yotel (I chose 0530...) spent another few hours in the lounge before my departure to SFO. The spa was great and made me feel so relaxed before the flight across the Atlantic. Food was great during both the evening and the staff all excellent - even going as far to bring a bag of French chocolates, in addition to the red luggage tag, before the journey.
While I cannot fault any aspect of the service, and it felt far more sincere and genuine than Qatar Airways, I do agree that some bloggers overhype the experience - but I can't exactly put my finger on why. It was worthwhile doing and I am so glad to have tried it out - especially with my long connection.
