I wrote to CX in the past about this and was assured that meal choice had nothing to do with upgrades. I find it hard to believe though, since the meals eg in Y and J ARE diffeerent, and upgrades often occur with a 6 hour window of departure. Maybe there is an earlier cut-off time for upgrades with special meals, but happen they do. Incidentially I am leaving for London in four days booked on veggie meals for the first time. Will report if I get veg-op-uped or not.
